Overlord is an Isekai anime series where our protagonist is transported to a virtual world game when he decides to experience the last few hours of YGGDRASIL the day it is scheduled to shut down. From here starts his dark and sometimes comedic journey to find a place for himself and his now-alive NPC friends, in his Sorcerer King avatar.
Here’s a list of dark Isekai anime like Overlord:
1. Mushoku Tensei: Isekai Ittara Honki Dasu
- IMDB Rating: 8.3/10
- Genre: Supernatural, Fantasy, Action
- Episodes: 17 (as of 8 November, 2021)
- Director: Manabu Okamoto
- Writer: Rifujin na Magonote (light novels)
- Cast: Yumi Uchiyama|Tomokazu Sugita, Konomi Kohara, Ai Kakuma
- Streaming Platform: Funimation Now, Muse Asia YouTube, AnimeLab, Wakanim
- Release Date: 30 April, 2021
Popularly referred to as the grandfather of Isekai — though Rifujin na Magonote has been open about the fact that it’s been inspired by other web novels — Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation, begins when its 34-year-old unemployed protagonist gets killed by a speeding truck and is reborn as Rudeus Greyrat in a world full of swords, demons, magic and monsters.
The coming-of-age saga unfolds as Rudy trains with sword and magic under his father and demon magician Roxy, respectively, and then leaves his home for the city of Roa. The plot doesn’t race along. We love its lack of urgency – it allows enough time for viewers to enjoy cliched fantasy tropes which complement the tale, and Japanese RPG-inspired expansive world building.
2. Sekai Saikou no Ansatsusha, Isekai Kizoku ni Tensei suru
- IMDB Rating: 7.8/10
- Genre: Action, Fantasy
- Episodes: Ongoing
- Director: Masafumi Tamura
- Writer: Rui Tsukiyo (light novels)
- Cast: Kenji Akabane, Shino Shimoji, Reina Ueda, Yûki Takada
- Streaming Platform: Crunchyroll, Muse Communication
- Release Date: 6 October, 2021
Better known as The World’s Finest Assassin Gets Reincarnated In Another World As An Aristocrat, this anime revolves around a retired hitman (reincarnated as Lugh Tuatha De) who has been tasked by a goddess to kill the Hero before he destroys the world.
If you couldn’t get into Jobless Reincarnation because of the uncomfortable vibes it gave you by its depiction of a 34-year-old born into a child’s body excessively fantasizing about girls he meets along his journey from kid to full grown man, Rui Tsukiyo’s tale will feel refreshing.
Lugh retains the memories from his previous life and behaves in an emotionally mature manner, for a change.
He trains under a magic teacher called Dia while simultaneously being taught House of Tuatha Dé’s art of assassination. But saying the story is about a master assassin surrounded by beautiful girls in a fantasy world, is selling it short.
3. Drifters
- IMDB Rating: 7.7/10
- Genre: Adventure, Dark Fantasy, Isekai
- Episodes: 12 (streaming), 2 (DVD-only)
- Director: Kenichi Suzuki, and others
- Writer: Kouta Hirano (manga)
- Cast: Yûichi Nakamura, Naoya Uchida, Mitsuki Saiga
- Streaming Platform: Crunchyroll, Funimation
- Release Date: 7 October, 2016
If you loved Hellsing, you’ll probably like Drifters, which has also been created by Kouta Hirano. Actual historical figures from different timelines are gathered together by a bespectacled man called Murasaki to form a group called the Drifters.
The Drifters have to overthrow group of evil warriors called the Ends to make sure this doesn’t happen. The plot is pretty straightforward in this sense. Even though we found its occasional forced humor to be unnecessary, we don’t feel that the anime suffers due to it.
You’ll even be able to forgive the sudden tonal shifts due to its excellent art style, extremely brutal action scenes and engaging battle tactics.
4. Grimgar, Ashes and Illusions | Hai to Gensou no Grimgar
- IMDB Rating: 7.4/10
- Genre: Adventure, Drama, Isekai
- Episodes: 12

Under a band called Team Manato, our heroes learn to develop their skills, live without their leader upon his unexpected demise and gradually operate smoothly as a unified group.
In this anime, the character arcs and the plot unfold at their own pace. There’s no rush to get from one point to another, and the entire series is elevated by gorgeous, watercolor backgrounds.
