WhatsApp’s Status feature is all set to get a colorful new update inspired by parent company Facebook soon. The latter had rolled out a feature last year which allowed people to post status updates on a colorful background with custom fonts and emojis.
It looks like WhatsApp’s using the same idea for its own ephemeral Status tool. The app’s Android beta is apparently testing the feature right now. It doesn’t appear to be present for all beta users though, even if they’re on the latest beta version. It might be a server side switch on the company’s side.
People can check if they’ve gotten hold of WhatsApp’s colorful status tool by heading to the Status tab and seeking out the floating pencil button at the bottom right. Choosing it will open up a screen with 3 icons to add emojis, change the background color, and select a font. Then it’s simply a matter of tapping on the green send arrow button to set it as their 24-hour status.

Status received a mixed response at its launch, with some preferring classic text-only statuses and others embracing the change. The latter base is apparently pretty sizable because WhatsApp claims that over 250 million users take advantage of the feature on a daily basis, far more than rival Snapchat which made the format popular in the first place.
You can download the WhatsApp for Android beta via APKMirror. Like we said above, you may or may not get access to colorful statuses even if you’re on the latest beta.
