Overlord season 4 feels like it’s long overdue since it has been around three years since the last season dropped. So when is the Overlord season 4 release date set for? How long before we get to watch the story of Ainz and his followers from the Great Tomb of Nazarick? We’re going to answer all this and more.
Overlord is a popular Isekai anime series directed by Naoyuki Ito and produced by the famous Madhouse studio. The anime adaptation is based on the light novel series written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by So-bin.
This dark fantasy anime series is inspired by pop culture giants like D&D and H.P. Lovecraft. With expert character development, good narration, and well-animated sequences, it not only manages to capture your interest, but also keeps you asking for more.

Likely Plot Of Overlord Season 4
The story in the light novels, right after the battle, goes into detail about the aftermath of the war. The anime might adopt the tenth installment of the light novel titled the ‘Ruler of Conspiracy’ where Jircniv, due to certain very well-timed misunderstandings, becomes a vassal to the Sorcerous Kingdom.
Fans may also expect to watch the Dwarven Kingdom arc from book 11 of the light novel in the upcoming Overlord S4. If the movie is going to cover the Holy Kingdom arc, by chronology, the Dwarven Kingdom should also be referenced in S4. The past three seasons of the anime span nine volumes of the light novel series.
Expected Overlord Season 4 Release Date
The Overlord season 4 release date has not been officially confirmed by Madhouse yet. Even though no official release date has been announced, some speculations can be made based on the timeline of previous seasons. We can expect the release of Overlord season 4 by late 2021 or early in 2022 (according to official word), assuming that season four follows similar production schedules as the previous seasons.
Although the fourth season was delayed due to the pandemic, the studio has been at work on the series diligently and as Maruyama states, you can steadily hear the footsteps approaching. The third season ended in 2018 and the fourth season will be arriving after a rather long hiatus.

Movie Details
We can assume that the movie may become available after the release of Overlord fourth season. The official website reveals that the production of the film has been approved, though no Overlord season 4 release date has been announced yet. The Overlord anime movie production is titled Holy Kingdom Edition which may be alluding to the plot of the film.
The 12th book, titled ‘Paladin of the Holy Kingdom’, takes place in the Holy Kingdom and may be the major setting. If this is true, it makes sense for the anime movie to be released after the fourth season of the series is aired.
Origin
Initially serialized online, the novel was acquired by Enterbrain and the first volume of the light novel was released in 2012. Enjoying its reputation as a top-selling light novel series in 2015, Overlord had already caused quite a ripple in Japan before the launch of the anime and manga. Almost 7 million copies of the light novel were printed by 2018. It’s no wonder that it was adapted into a successful anime series with high viewer demand not only in Japan, but also throughout the world.
The Story Up Till Now
The first season of Overlord deals with building the stage for the show. It’s set in the year 2138 where hyper-immersive DMMO-RPGs, or Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, are a thing. Momonga is transported to a parallel world in the body of his YGGDRASIL game avatar, surrounded by the NPCs belonging to his guild.
The NPCs have achieved sentience and can use all the abilities assigned to them in the game. To contact more players who might have been transported to the new world, Momonga changes his name to Ainz Ooal Gown, the better known name of his guild. Ainz, along with one of the Pleiades battle maids, Narberal Gamma, travels to the nearest city of E-Rantel to explore more about the world to which they have been transported.
Under the guise of Momon, Ainz joins the adventurers guild and completes quests while gaining more information. Simultaneously, the floor guardians of the Great Tomb of Nazarick also venture out to find more clues about the world.
In one of their excursions, Shalltear Bloodfallen gets brainwashed and hostile towards Ainz. With the aim of undoing this, Ainz concocts a plan to kill her and then resurrect her, and thus break the curse. After an epic battle, Momonga defeats Shalltear in the season finale.
In the second season, Ainz tasks Cocytus (the Guardian of the 5th Floor of Nazarick) to take over the Lizardman Village. After failing to conquer the Lizardmen in his first attempt, Cocytus faces and defeats them in battle and brings the Lizardmen under the fold of Nazarick. In E-Rantel, Sebas Tian goes undercover as a butler to a traveling noble, played by Solution Epsilon.
Sebas adopts a slave girl whom he rescued from a brothel owned by the Eight Fingers, a criminal organization that controlled the underground dealings in the kingdom. After running afoul with the group over the rescue of Tsuare, Sebas, with permission from Ainz, assaults the headquarters of the Eight Fingers, killing their leader and capturing the rest with the help of Mare, a dark elf floor guardian.
Demiurge hatches a plan to increase the standing of Ainz, masquerading as Momon, in the city of E-Rantel. To achieve his short-term and long-term goals, he takes on the persona of demon emperor Jaldabaoth and attacks the city of E-Rantel. Momon helps the Blue Roses in their fight against Jaldabaoth.
After being toyed around with by Jaldabaoth initially, the Blue Roses are eventually rescued by Momon. A fierce mock battle ensues between Momon and Jaldabaoth with the former defeating the latter and thus becoming a hero in the eyes of the empire.
The third season of the anime series continues to lay out Demiurge’s plan to carve a kingdom from the events in E-Rantel. A noble from the neighboring Bahuruth Empire is manipulated into sending an adventuring party into the Great Tomb of Nazarick. This intrusion is used by Ainz as a declaration of hostility, but eventually leads to an alliance. Ainz declares himself the Sorcerer King and claims E-Rantel as his domain. This is rejected by the Kingdom of Re-Estize which owns the city.
Baharuth Empire’s ruler, Jircniv, plots to have everyone realize how dangerous the Sorcerer King actually is and thus make allies capable of overthrowing him. It is planned that Ainz will kick off the fight against Re-Estize with a high-level spell and the rest of the battle will be won by the empire’s army.
The battle starts with the empire fielding 60,000 well-trained soldiers as compared to the kingdom with their 245,000 conscripts. Ainz starts casting high-level magic with a long cast time. His intention is to identify any potential players that may attack him during casting as that was common in the game. Once he confirms that no players exist on the enemy’s side, he casts the dark spell, Ia-Shub-Niggurath.
After single-handedly slaughtering the opposing army, Ainz brings the city of E-Rantel under his control. His alter ego, the trustworthy adventurer Momon (played by Pandora’s Actor) is planted as a City representative and law enforcer in order to weed out possible rebellions.
Why Is It So Popular?
The popularity of Overlord can be credited to its unconventional story of the apparently evil Ainz and his minions. While we have been force-fed the good versus evil narrative that the majority of stories tend to take, Overlord humanizes the evil that Ainz and the Great Tomb of Nazarick represent.
Though you may not agree with his methods, you are compelled to admire Ainz and his merry band of horrors for their obnoxious strength and fairly relatable motivations. Even if you may sometimes get a bit weary of the way in which they manage to defeat their enemies without breaking into sweat, the style of storytelling and richness of detail give you interesting characters to root for.
