You’re here because you watched Demon Slayer and probably wondered how old is Nezuko Kamado, the young girl from the anime whose brother, Tanjiro, is the main character of the show.
How old is Nezuko?
Nezuko Kamado is 12 years old at the start of Demon Slayer.
Nezuko was born on December 28. She is the youngest person in the show at the beginning of the anime. She weighs 45 kilograms and is 153 centimeters, or 5 feet tall.
When Tanjiro trains to become part of the demon slayer corps, he leaves Nezuko by his mentor Sakonji’s side.
During this two-year period, she sleeps as if she is in a coma. By the time we get to the Entertainment District Arc, Nezuko is 14 years old; or that’s what we are led to believe.
But because of the comatose state she’s been in, Nezuko’s chronological age is 14 years old in season 2, even though her biological age is still 12 years old.
Is Nezuko older than Tanjiro?
No. Nezuko is not older than Tanjiro. She is his younger sister. At the start of the story, she was 12 and he was 13. After the two-year training period, by the end of chapter 5, they are 14 and 15 years old, respectively.
Who is Nezuko?
Kamado Nezuko is the deuteragonist in Demon Slayer, and also the younger sister of the main protagonist, Tanjiro.
Her character appearance is that of a fair, petite young girl with strange pink eyes with paler pink irises.
A dark brown haori (traditional Japanese hip- or thigh-length jacket worn over a kimono) covers her light pink kimono.
She also wears pink sandals and appears to be biting down on bamboo. Pink ribbons highlight her black hair.
Before she transformed into a demon, she was depicted as having a kind and caring personality.
Since attaining her demon form, she has developed strong willpower which she displays when she gets offered blood from the Wind Hashira, Sanemi Shinazugawa.
The veteran demon slayer corps member does this to prove to everyone present that all demons are the same as they crave human blood and suffering.
It’s true demons have an insatiable hunger for human blood. But Nezuko resists this urge using sheer willpower.
She attempts speech in rare instances but ends up stuttering a lot; it is possible that this disability is due to both her gag and her trauma.
Her demonic state brings forth her strongest physical self which is shown by the vein-like pattern that appears on her forehead.
Why does Nezuko live in a box?
Demons hate the sun. Just like vampires from ancient lore, these creatures from Kimetsu no Yaiba have a similar weakness.
The lethality of the sun on demons varies by their strength and place in the hierarchy. Since Nezuko has been transformed into a demon at the start of the story, she is vulnerable to the effects of the sun too.
Hence, she changes her size in order to fit inside the box. However, in a later point in the story, we see her acquiring a unique ability that lets her expose herself to the sun but not get burnt in the process.
Nezuko Abilities:
All of Nezuko’s abilities are demonic traits.
Changing Body Size: She is able to manipulate her body size and height. This is evident from the fact that she shrinks in order to fit inside the box made to protect her from the sun. She can change back to her original size when she fights other demons.
General Strength Upgrade: Even without the training that her older brother, Tanjiro, had to go through, her strength is enhanced compared to her fellow average demons even without consuming human flesh.
She doesn’t have any martial skills nor does she display any finesse while taking down enemies. Her initial attack style is very raw and prioritizes the use of her brute strength.
She can completely decapitate a regular demon by just kicking the neck region. This area of the entity is considered to be its weakest and veteran demon slayers always aim to attack this particular region of the creature with the weapons they use.
Towards the end of the anime/manga series, Nezuko’s strength is said to be equal to an upper moon demon’s.
Hyper Regeneration: Healing at a rate exponential to humans isn’t anything out of the ordinary for demons.
However, Nezuko’s regeneration is able to take that to the next level. She can regenerate her severed limbs at an insane speed with remarkable proficiency.
This trait is also at a comparable level to an upper moon demon’s regeneration ability.
Demonic Transformation: When she feels her or her brother’s life being threatened, she goes into berserk mode and takes on a demonic physical form.
This triggers her demon crests to appear all over her body in a green vine-like pattern.
Several veins pop up all over her body and a single horn protrudes from her right forehead.
It’s obvious that this form indicates her general strength and fighting ability.
Protection Against The Sun: Another unique demon-like trait Nezuko develops on her adventures with Tanjiro is resistance towards sunlight.
After her battle with an upper moon demon, she is able to tolerate sun exposure without being completely burnt to ash. This ability is not known to appear in other demons.
Blood Demon Arts: These abilities are spells or techniques that a lot of higher-level demons are able to perform.
Since Nezuko’s strength and other attributes are comparable to an upper moon demon’s, it’s no surprise that she can boast of this as well.
Her specific technique allows her to manifest pinkish demonic flames that she produces from her own blood.
These flames deal lethal damage to other demons but are innocuous to normal humans.
However, the more we progress in the story, the more complicated her ability is seen to get.
One such development is that we see is her flames being able to turn Tanjiro’s Nichirin blade from black to red.
This increases the effectiveness of the weapon in fighting against higher level demons and allows him to perform the Dance of the Fire God techniques with more prowess. Nezuko’s blood demon art is also referred to as Exploding Blood.
Interesting facts about Nezuko

Interestingly enough, she is also the singer who sang the Super Smash Bros theme song “Lifelight”.
The Japanese voice actor’s name is Akari Kito. Some in the community say that Kito looks similar to Nezuko. Well, both are 5 feet tall.
Want more reasons why she’s the perfect choice for the character? The first part of the voice actor’s name is “Ki” (Kito Akari is how the name is arranged in Kanji). “Ki” means “Demon”.
Chosen One: Nezuko Kamado is referred to as the chosen demon by Muzan as she is the only one of their kind to be able to walk around exposed to the sun and not get completely burnt to ash.
Even Muzan, the progenitor of all demons, fears the sun to a surprising extent.
Symbolic Name: The Kamado family used to live in a snowy mountain region before the demon attack.
The name “Nezuko” in Kanji partially translates to “Snowball flower” in English. This flower blossoms in the winter. Hence, she was probably named after the flower.
An Important Family Heritage: Tanjiro and Nezuko are the successors to the most powerful breathing technique that ever existed.
It is said that the sun style, the skill passed down the family line, is the root of all breathing techniques.
All other breath forms branched off from the sun style. The Kamado family-inherited series of breathing forms are referred to as the “Hinokami Kagura” or “The Dance of the Fire God”. There are 13 known sub-techniques in total.
